Mary (Jane Wilde), consumed with concern about Michael's whereabouts, prays in the church for his safe return. Tommy Pistol, the pastor, enters to see how she's doing. Mary is still upset, so Tommy tells her once more to accept the situation as it is. Mary, though, is adamant. She has a deep-seated inner knowing that Michael will never abandon her. Tommy takes a seat across from Mary. Telling her that he understands how a loss like this might cloud her judgement, he seems empathetic. Mary, however, refuses to back down and tells Tommy that she senses an unusual presence. Everyone in the community seems to be...off. Tommy becomes reflective for a little and asks Mary why she chose to marry in THIS town and leave her family behind. Mary informs Tommy that a change of scenery was much required. Tommy, though, believes Mary is concealing something. He informs her that she must confess if she truly wants his assistance. Mary reluctantly tells Tommy that she is expecting a child. Tommy asks Mary specific questions on the conception while grinning. She doesn't see how discussing this may be beneficial. Tommy assures her that if she succumbed to temptation, Michael must have done the same and will not be returning. That's something she has to acknowledge. Maybe her punishment for giving in to temptation is Michael departing. Mary is in disbelief. She tells Tommy that she's utterly perplexed and will stop at nothing to change her feelings—that is, if Tommy would pardon her. Tommy gets an idea from this. He tells Mary he can help as he strokes her leg. Mary claimed she would do anything, but how far will she go in reality?
